Does chiropractic spinal manipulation help treat fibromyalgia?
-
Celeste Cooper answered:Prevalent in fibromyalgia is the comorbid condition myofascial pain syndrome (AKA chronic myofascial pain). If you have these knotted up pieces of muscle fiber that shorten the muscle, radiate pain and cause dysfunction, bodywork is indicated.
Soft tissue chiropractic therapies, such as active release therapy, are helpful in releasing myofascial trigger points, which restores the muscle to its normal resting length and function of joints in the body.

Dr. Kyle True answered:Chiropractic therapy has been shown effective in helping with the symptoms of fibromyalgia. A study was performed examing the effects of fibromyalgia when undergoing spinal manipulation therapy (SMT). After 15 treatments, fibromyalgia patients reported suffering less pain and an improved sleep quality. By putting the spine into its proper alignment, the brain and the body can communicate through the nervous system properly. This will help restore the body to its optimal health. This can cause a decrease in muscle spasms and tender points experienced by Fibromyalgia patients.
Some Chiropractors will also help evaluate their patients in nutritional counseling. A diet high in pro-inflammatory foods (processed carbohydrates, saturated fat, etc.) has been shown to increase pain or re-aggrevate the symptoms of fibromyalgia patients.
Moderate exercise has been shown to be effective in helping reduce the symptoms/pain suffered by Fibromyalgia patients.
Following these plans may help some patients find relief in their Fibromyalgia symptoms.
