What lifestyle changes should I make if I have deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?

The duration of DVT varies from case to case. People with a DVT may be prescribed some of the following: compression stockings; bed rest after surgery (if applicable), medication, which may get rid of their blood clots within a few weeks or months. Other DVTs, such as those with inherited blood-clotting disorders, may always be at risk of DVT, even if particular blood clots are successfully treated. You may live indefinitely with a blood clot as long as it does not dislodge or break apart and move through your heart to the artery in your lungs.
