Becoming unemployed and losing coverage is considered a qualifying event and allows you to  keep your existing health care plan under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA).  Your employer cannot cancel your existing policy and under the terms of COBRA you will be allowed to keep your current health care plan for up to 18 months. Your health plan administrator will let you know in writing about the cost and options that are available to you.  Also, if you are eligible for a group plan but opted out of that plan because you had other coverage at the time, when you lose that other coverage because of  unemployment you may go back into the plan you opted out of during a 30-day enrollment period.
