Should I cut out certain foods if I am trying to lose weight?

Dr. Michael T Murray answered:Although the Hunger Free Forever program emphasizes good-tasting foods that assist in your weight-loss goals, it is important to realize that there are foods that can easily sabotage your success if you don't learn to turn away from them. Does this mean that you can never eat chocolate or ice cream? No. As long as you are able to eat these foods in real moderation and on an infrequent basis, they pose no real problem. For example, many people can eat a very small square of chocolate one tiny nibble at a time and not end up eating many extra calories. Others, however, would be better off abstaining from chocolate altogether because they are unable to be moderate in their consumption. If they eat one tiny piece, it inflames their passions and they end up eating several hundred calories of chocolate before they are able to stop.
When it comes to problem foods, our guidelines are the same as those we give for alcohol consumption. For example, moderate drinkers can have one or two drinks and they are perfectly happy to stop. There is no inner compulsion that drives them to drink more and more after that first drink. An alcoholic, on the other hand, is far better off abstaining from alcohol altogether. For an alcoholic, one or two drinks tend to turn on compulsive desires that lead them to drink to excess. In the same way, many overweight people find greater success in maintaining abstinence from high-calorie, super tasty foods rather than trying to exert self-control over these high temptation choices.
