Dr. Louis Rosner answered:The cerebral attack is a type of episode that rarely occurs in multiple sclerosis (MS), with only a 3 percent incidence rate. The symptoms come on like those of a stroke and include mental disturbance; seizures; loss of speech expression or comprehension (aphasia); one-sided visual field loss (hemianopsia); or sensory loss or weakness of the face, arm, and leg on one side (hemiparesis). Epileptic seizures are occasionally seen with MS, but the conditions are not necessarily related.
In general, cerebral attacks are so unusual in MS that other diagnoses tend to be uppermost in the doctor's thinking until the rapid and complete recovery brings multiple sclerosis to mind.
