What's the main cause of tooth decay in type 1 diabetes?
-
Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:Tooth decay in type 1 diabetes results from the interaction of plaque bacteria with dietary sugars. Type 1 diabetics are at higher risk for dental problems, including tooth decay and gum disease. The best way to prevent the build up of plaque on teeth and gums is to brush the teeth at least two minutes each time, two or three times a day. Also remember to floss your teeth to remove the plaque from between each tooth. Good dental care is important with type 1 diabetes. Regular oral care at home is also important to keep teeth and gums clean.
