What do I need to know about caring for someone with peanut allergy?
-
First, you should know that your friend or family member allergic to peanuts cannot eat them or be exposed to them in any way. The best way to prevent allergic reactions is to read food labels and ask questions about the food prepared for your loved one. Especially if the person you're caring for is a child who isn't particularly interested in reading food labels, you and your child need to be prepared in case of an allergic reaction. Make sure you're acquainted with the signs and symptoms of a reaction: rash or hives, swelling, trouble breathing, and dizziness. Also, make sure you have antihistamines on hand to treat a mild reaction. In case of a serious reaction, you and your child should always carry an epinephrine auto-injector and know how to use it.
