What do I need to know about caring for someone with brain cancer?
-
If someone you care for has brain cancer, they may face weeks of radiation treatments and possibly chemotherapy. Even if the cancer cannot be cured, this treatment may extend the patient's life for years.
Your loved one may feel stunned and scared. It may help them to learn everything possible about their tumor. Encourage the patient to relax, eat healthfully, get restful sleep, and exercise if that feels good. Encourage them to talk to someone - friends, family, a counselor, or a support group.
People with brain cancer will likely lose the ability to make their own decisions about end-of-life care. They may want to set up advance directives, such as a living will or medical power of attorney.
