Shingles is treated with antiviral medications, which control the virus that causes this disease. Your doctor will remind you to make sure that the person you are caring for takes all doses of antiviral medication on schedule. Your doctor may also suggest using pain relievers, if necessary, and applying cool compresses to the person's blisters. 

To care for someone with shingles, remember that the condition isn't life-threatening but it can cause some severe symptoms. Your loved one may experience extreme itchiness or pain, so be aware of and help them manage their symptoms. It's also important to watch for signs of complications, like if the rash becomes more widespread or starts to look red and infected. This is especially important for people with weakened immune systems and for older adults. Also, keep in mind that your loved one is contagious for several days or even weeks, so they should avoid contact with people who haven't had chickenpox.
