    Dr. Josh Johnston answered:
Epidemic kerato-conjuctivitis (EKC), is a highly contagious virus that effects the eye. The virus is most commonly spread through hand to hand contact and when the virus is airborne. The virus can survive on objects like a doorknob for up to 2 weeks so an infected patient must maintain good hygiene by washing hands frequently. Several complications that can even blur vision can occur with EKC so it is important to see an eye doctor such as an optometrist or ophthalmologist to properly treat and diagnose the problem.
