What care can I expect after the braces are taken off?

American Dental Association answered:Braces and orthodontic treatment are used to correct teeth that are crowded or crooked. After your braces are removed, your dentist will fit your mouth for a removable or permanent retainer that holds teeth in their new positions. Your dentist will also arrange follow-up visits with you to monitor your teeth. Make sure to follow your dentist's instructions after having your braces removed and always remember to brush twice a day and floss daily to keep your mouth healthy.

Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:After your braces come off, you'll receive a thorough cleaning of your teeth. This may be followed by an x-ray to see the "after" images of your teeth. Your orthodontist, a doctor who specializes in crooked teeth and misaligned bites, may also check to make sure your wisdom teeth haven't grown in. Then, he or she may fit you for a retainer, a removable device that holds your newly straightened teeth in place. Follow your orthodontist's instructions for wearing a retainer and all follow-up care.

Dr. Dante Gonzales answered:After your braces come off your orthodontist will make you a retainer to maintain the corrections that have been made during orthodontic treatment. Today, most orthodontists will recommend lifetime retention, however, over time you will be able to wear the retainer less and less. To start, your orthodontist will usually recommend that you wear your retainer everyday. Over the years you can gradually reduce the time that your retainer is worn. A consult with your orthodontist may be needed before you start to reduce your retainer wear.
A week or two after the braces are removed it is prudent to see your general dentist for a cleaning and exam. Wisdom teeth do not need to be removed because of the orthodontic treatment, however, there are many other reasons why you should get the wisdom teeth extracted. An examination by an oral surgeon may be needed to check and see if you need your wisdom teeth removed.
