Of the cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), heart attacks and strokes are the leading causes of death. In fact, about 2,400 people die of a heart attack or stroke each day in the United States. That's approximately one death every 36 seconds; in other words, in the time it will probably take you to finish reading this chapter, more than 30 people will have died of these two CVDs. This number is staggering to contemplate -think of all the hardship and pain this cause of premature death produces for millions of people each year. Despite the enormous amounts of money being spent to thwart CVD, including the fixation on lowering cholesterol, lives continue to be lost.
