What’s your rush? Catheter ablation is an effective treatment for atrial fibrillation. But this procedure is serious business and does carry some risks. That’s why in most cases your doctor will first try medication or less-invasive procedures to right your rhythm-challenged heart.

    UCLA Health answered:
Cardiac ablation is usually performed after other treatments are tried for atrial fibrillation. For instance, if your atrial fibrillation is unresolved after using prescribed medications and/or electrical cardioversion, your doctor may recommend cardiac ablation. If you experience side effects from medications used to treat atrial fibrillation, your doctor may recommend cardiac ablation as a way to end the irregular heartbeat. Or, you may want to avoid taking medication altogether and opt for cardiac ablation.
