Canker sores may return frequently and may be only one canker sore or several. There exact cause for developing is not clear but can include:
    • Infections from bacteria, viruses or fungus
    • Irritation from a loose orthodontic wire, a denture that doesn’t fit, or a sharp edge from a broken tooth or filling
    • The symptom of a disease or disorder.

Canker sores may develop at the beginning of a woman's menstrual cycle. Some people develop them during or after stressful events or situations, such as examinations or a stressful job situation such as meeting a deadline. Canker sores have been known to develop after eating certain foods to which a person may be hypersensitive or allergic. Perhaps a common denominator in these possible triggers is the immune system, but it is not clear how any of them might affect it in a way that allows canker sores to develop.
