If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant in the near future, you should talk to your doctor before receiving Benlysta infusions. Benlysta (belimumab) is a drug given by infusion into a vein to treat systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the most common form of the autoimmune disease lupus.

There are no good studies examining the safety of Benlysta during pregnancy. You and your doctor need to weigh Benlysta's potential benefits to you against the potential danger to your baby. If you and your doctor decide that you should avoid pregnancy while taking Benlysta, you may need to use contraception not only during treatment but for at least four months after it ends.

Scientists don't know whether Benlysta can pass into breast milk and affect a breastfeeding baby. You and your doctor need to determine whether it is best for you to stop breastfeeding or to hold off on taking Benlysta. Breastfeeding while taking Benlysta is not recommended.

If you become pregnant while taking Benlysta, call your doctor immediately. In addition to helping you decide the best course of action to take, your doctor may suggest that you register for the ongoing pregnancy registry that is collecting data on women who take Benlysta during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor for more information.
