If the placenta is near or blocking the cervix, as is the case with placenta previa, it may not interfere with your baby's development if you're not bleeding severely or have another health condition. Your doctor will make sure to keep an eye on your baby's growth and heart rate during your pregnancy. One risk to your baby related to placenta previa, though, is premature birth. If you are bleeding excessively, you may have to undergo a C-section. If it is before 36 weeks, your baby's organs may not be fully developed. Your baby may have to spend time in the hospital after it is born depending on any complications from its prematurity.

If there is severe or uncontrollable bleeding from the placenta previa, the fetus may need to be delivered by cesarean section prior to the completion of the gestational period.
