Can a needle biopsy cause breast cancer to spread?

    There’s no evidence for that at all, and this is a minimally invasive way to make an accurate diagnosis, with either a core needle biopsy, which actually removes a core of tissue, or with a fine needle aspiration. It’s like a Pap smear, where you can identify normal cells versus cancer cells. You might think intuitively that putting a needle into something would spread it. Needles have been put into tumors all over the body for decades now, and we’ve had no evidence that this causes a spread of cancer.
