  1. Since the cause of irritable bowel syndrome is not entirely understood, there are no established measures to prevent it. If you have irritable bowel syndrome, however, you may be able to prevent or reduce symptom flare-ups by managing your stress. Effective stress management techniques include deep breathing, counseling, biofeedback, and progressive relaxation exercises.

    You can't prevent irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). But proper self-care may help ease symptoms and may extend the time between episodes. Self-care includes quitting smoking, avoiding caffeine and foods that make symptoms worse and getting regular exercise.
