Can intraocular melanoma be prevented?

Because not much is known about the causes of intraocular melanoma, there is not much that can be done to prevent it. The association between sun exposure and the development of intraocular melanoma is not necessary proven, so limiting exposure to ultraviolet rays may or may not help prevent the disease. To be safe, it's a good idea to wear sunglasses that shield from both UVA and UVB rays when outside. Also, since intraocular melanoma is commonly found during routine eye exams, it's important to get yearly checkups with an eye doctor, especially if you're older.
