Can I question my dental health coverage?

Absolutely.  Asking questions about your dental health coverage is incredibly important and a very smart thing to do. You want to make sure you have a very clear understanding of what is covered, what percent of likely charges are paid for, what percent are your responsibility, who you can see, and how often.  Also, don’t feel like you have to ask all your questions at once; feel free to call back as many times as you need to as questions arise.

Once you have assessed the specific dental therapies covered in your insurance plan, write down questions about your policy and your personal dental needs and call your carrier’s customer service center. Insurance companies employ customer service representatives (CSRs) who often have experience with working in dental offices. CSRs have a full understanding of your dental plan and procedures and are trained to answer your dental insurance questions. If you don't feel that your questions are being answered, ask to speak with a supervisor.  On a side note, most managed care dental insurance companies will not cover any treatments not listed in the policy. If you believe you have been refused coverage unjustly, first work with your insurer to make sure your plan covers the treatment you received.
