Dr. Jeffrey Saver of UCLA Health answered:Many hemorrhagic strokes are preventable. Chronic high blood pressure is a major risk factor for hemorrhagic stroke, so controlling high blood pressure can avert many brain bleeds. Smoking also increases the risk of brain hemorrhage and tobacco cessation can substantially reduce one’s risk. For some patients who have brain aneurysms (balloon outpouchings of vessel walls), filling the aneurysmal sac with coils to close it off can eliminate the chance it will bleed in the future.
