    Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:
We don't really know if any specific foods can cause osteoarthritis (OA). There's a lot of folklore about nightshade plants (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplant) causing OA or making it worse, but there's very little evidence for this. Ditto for dairy foods, coffee, citrus fruits and lots of other foods.

Foods can't cause osteoarthritis, but a poor diet can make the condition worse. A high-fat diet can cause weight gain and obesity, which trigger inflammation in the body, and can lead to joint damage and osteoarthritis. High-fat foods are loaded with calories, which can put on extra pounds on the body, and extra pressure on the knee and hip joints.

A healthy diet and regular physical activity will lessen the likelihood of weight gain and decrease the risk of osteoarthritis.
