Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:
It's rare for children to require dentures. If young children lose their teeth, most of the time they are losing their baby teeth and do not require any replacements since their adult teeth will grow in and replace them. If older children lose adult teeth, it's normally due to an injury or accident and not due to tooth decay or gum disease (which are the more common reasons for tooth loss in adults). In those cases, more permanent solutions like implants or fixed bridges are usually used. In rare instances there can be teeth that are congenitaly missing or missing teeth can be related to systemic diseasea. Talk to your dentist if you're concerned about a child's missing teeth.

It is rare for children to require dentures. However, if due to a pathological condition or an accident they lose their teeth, dentures can be made. Due to the rapid growth of the jaws of children the dentures would have to be replaced often. Implants and fixed bridges are not recommended for children until the jaws stop growing.

In very special circumstances, children will need dentures. These are situations where a child is born with a developmental condition relating to teeth, bone, or other syndromes. Often the child's physician or medical team will help guide parents to the appropriate specialist or specialist team, often including a prosthodontist, an orthodontist, and an oral surgeon.

Yes, children sometimes need dentures, but they are not a common treatment except for temporary dentures replacing teeth lost too soon. If the primary (baby) teeth are lost too soon a denture replacing them will maintain the space needed for the adult teeth to erupt. Also, children may knock out a front tooth and need a temporary replacement for the tooth until they are old enough for a permanent replacement. This type of replacement prostheses is also known as dentures.

In very rare cases a child may lose all their teeth due to massive decay, an accident or a genetic defect. These types of dentures will need to be replaced as the child grows, and hopefully, as the adult teeth erupt.
