Children with depression can take certain antidepressants. But the drugs should be prescribed by a doctor who specializes in childhood mood disorders. In some cases, certain antidepressants can cause suicidal thoughts in children and teens. Be sure to ask your child's doctor about this risk for your child. Also, if your child takes an antidepressant, ask her to tell you or another adult if she's having suicidal thoughts or strong emotional feelings.
