Fortical is the brand name of a man-made form of calcitonin. This is a natural hormone made in the thyroid gland. This nasal spray treats osteoporosis in women who have been in menopause for at least five years. Osteoporosis is a common condition with weak, thin and brittle bones. Calcitonin can also be given as an injection. In this form, it is used to treat osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). In this genetic condition, bones break very easily. It also causes weak muscles, brittle teeth, a curved spine and hearing loss. Talk with your doctor about using calcitonin for OI.
