The mood swings of bipolar disorder can be treated. Mood-stabilizing medications are the first choice of a doctor, usually a psychiatrist, in treating bipolar disorder. Mood-stabilizing medications may include lithium and anticonvulsants. Along with the mood stabilizers, your doctor may prescribe an atypical antipsychotic medication to treat symptoms of bipolar I disorder. Some of the atypical antipsychotic medications can relieve the symptoms of mania associated with bipolar I disorder.
