Because doctors do not as of yet know what the specific cause of biliary atresia is, it would be very difficult to prevent. The cause is most likely a developmental issue that is not inherited and begins while the child is still in fetal development. Early detection and treatment is the only way to prevent more serious issues - such as cirrhosis or even death - from occurring.
