Aphthous stomatitis, or canker sores, are not usually serious, but can be frustrating and painful for their recipient. Canker sores appear inside the mouth and are not contagious, but can return frequently. Their exact cause is uncertain but some experts believe that immune system problems, bacteria or viruses may be involved. Canker sores usually heal on their own after a week or two.

Canker sores, or aphthous stomatitis, can be painful and annoying, but they rarely cause health complications. Most canker sores go away on their own in a week or so without treatment. However, if you have severe or re-occurring canker sores, your doctor can prescribe the antibiotic tetracycline. One potential side effect of tetracycline, however, is a fungal infection called thrush, which -- ironically -- can cause mouth sores.

  3. Aphthous stomatitis (canker sore) does not usually have any complications. Practicing good oral hygiene during an outbreak is important. A doctor or dentist should examine ulcers that last longer than two weeks, have sores are larger than half an inch, or are more painful than normal. A severe outbreak may signal an underlying health condition that needs medical attention.
