By using an addiction as a way of dulling or avoiding sensation, you may temporarily escape something painful. However, in the process, you lose your ability to choose your response to an experience because you will never really know what it feels like. By forcing yourself to take slow, deep breaths and continue to focus on your breathing, your whole body eventually relaxed. More slow breaths will let your mind remain quiet.
