Eating breakfast can actually help people with diabetes lose weight. Even though it seems like skipping a meal ought to cut down on calories and result in weight loss, that’s not the case. In a study as part of the National Weight Control Registry, nearly 80% of the people who maintained a weight loss for a year said they ate breakfast every day, while only 4% reported skipping breakfast all the time.

If you skip breakfast, you’re much more likely to overeat at your next meal. That’s bad news for people with diabetes, who need to eat regular meals at regular times to help maintain even levels of blood sugar.

Break the fast overnight to provide your body with a breakfast of carbohydrate, protein and fat for stable blood glucose. For example, low fat yogurt contains all 3 macronutrients listed for a complete breakfast. Stable blood glucose in a low calorie, nutrient dense diet will prevent hunger and overeating. Include whole grains, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats such as olive oil, proteins including lean meat, nuts, legumes, beans, soy or dairy and reduced saturated fat, sodium and sugar. A Registered Dietitian can help you plan meals that are individualized with the right amount of calories and nutrients to manage your diabetes.

The properly working thyroid sets the body’s metabolic rate for the day. But it is a stupid, primitive, evolutionary caveman/woman throwback. If you don’t eat first thing in the morning the thyroid goes into fat-storing mode.

If on the other hand, you eat breakfast, your stupid thyroid assumes that the clan brought down that mammoth and that there is plenty of food to be had. It puts you into fat burning, energy using mode.

It is a documented fact that folks who actually eat breakfast lose more weight and/or are less heavy than those who skip breakfast. I know this is counter-intuitive. We have patients who haven’t eaten breakfast (or even lunch too in some cases) for years who can’t see how adding more calories will help them lose weight.

When you have diabetes, it's a good idea to eat consistent amounts of carbohydrates at every meal to help stabilize blood sugar levels. It's important to eat breakfast, whether you have diabetes or not, to lose weight. Most people, who skip meals, get so hungry that they eat excess amounts of calories at the next meal. This can make it difficult to lose weight. If you have diabetes and end up eating too many carbohydrates, your blood sugar could go too high. Don't forget to include protein at every meal to help stabilize blood sugar levels.

Eating breakfast is a healthy way to start the day. For people with diabetes, it is particularly helpful in maintaining weight as well as blood sugar. Eating a low carbohydrate breakfast will give you the energy you need to start the day and helps you to avoid snacking on high fat high carbohydrate foods mid-morning. Balancing your meals and having a consistent amount of carbs at each meal will help to avoid the high and low blood sugars and overall will stop you from overeating, which will eventually lead to modest weight loss.

Eating breakfast can not only help one with diabetes lose weight, but it is a good weight loss strategy for everyone. Many studies have shown that regular breakfast eaters tend to be leaner than those who skip breakfast. Eating earlier in the day versus later in the day promotes an overall lower appetite, and consequently fewer calories consumed. Those who eat very little or skip the morning meal often find themselves overeating in the afternoon or evening hours. Eating breakfast is especially important for those with diabetes as it is well known that spreading out foods (in particular, carbohydrates) improves blood sugar control. Build your breakfast with high fiber grains such as whole oats, proteins such as eggs, and color from fruits and vegetables for optimal satiety and balance.

Eating breakfast whether you are a person with diabetes or a person who is attempting to lose or maintain weight should help satisfy your hunger throughout the morning. This could help reduce the temptation to snack mid-morning on some high calorie, high fat snack. The Evidence Analysis Library of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics made this recommendation for consuming breakfast.

Total caloric intake should be distributed throughout the day, with the consumption of 4 to 5 meals/snacks per day including breakfast.
