Is it always okay to break pills or tablets in half?

    No! Don't crush or break any capsules or tablets unless your doctor and pharmacist specifically tell you that this is safe to do. Some drugs may be absorbed too quickly if they're broken or if the capsule is removed before you swallow it.

    No, it is not always okay to break tablets. Sometimes it is okay, especially if the tablet has a score line on it. That means that the manufacturer has formed the tablet to break in equal halves. However, if the pill is coated, do not break it. Some medications are coated to protect the stomach from irritation. Other medications are sustained-release; if those are cut in half, the medication may be released too rapidly which could be very dangerous. The pharmacist will always be able to give you advice on specific medications when asked.
