Our body is great at maintaining a good balance between how much bone is being formed verses how much bone is being reabsorbed daily. Low body weight has been shown to mess with this balance. It increases the rate of reabsorbtion, while it’s not matched by bone formation; thus leading to decreased total bone mass density. As a result, patients with low body weight have higher risks of bone fractures, especially of the vertebral bodies and hips.
