Dr. Deborah Neiman answered:Weight loss is a great healer on many parts of the body. As Dr. Oz points out, the joints are the first area of your body to let you know your weight loss has been a success - they stop aching and tell you that they can move more freely and work better for you.
As well as the joints, weight loss improves your cardiovascular risk factors - risks for developing heart attacks, high blood pressure and stroke. Most weight loss will lower your overall cholesterol level and improve your ratio of good to bad cholesterol as well as lowering your triglycerides. This has the effect of lowering your risk for developing heart attacks and strokes.
Also, as you lose weight your heart is not working quite as hard to get you around and it can get back to a better "fitness" - improving your cardiovascular fitness with weight loss and exercise is one of the best treatments you can give yourself and can do wonders to improve your quality of life as well as your longevity.
For some, weight loss will lower their risk for developing Type II Diabetes, or diabetes that is associated with insulin resistance and usually found in adults. By lowering your weight, you lower your body's resistance to insulin and lower your chances of developing diabetes or at least, of developing some of the side effects from diabetes. Again, it can go a long way to improving your quality of life and longevity.
So, weight loss, done properly, can do quite a bit to help you improve your health, your heart and your quality of life.
