The benefits of self-massage include greater relaxation, a decrease in knots in your muscles, a decrease in tension, and an increase in blood supply to help flush out toxins. The premise is the same as a getting a deep-tissue sports massage, although the foam roll cannot penetrate as deeply as a well-trained massage therapist. Using a foam roller, you would place gentle pressure on knots in your muscles in various exercise positions (depending on which muscles you are trying to work on) which helps to decrease the excitability in the muscles and release tension.

Using a foam roller for self-massage has many benefits.  Often times our daily life causes a build up of knots in our muscles that keep the muscles from contracting and lengthening like they should.  Foam rolling will help release those knots in the muscles so that they can lengthen and contract properly.  Many times you can't even tell that you have these knots, but after a proper foam rolling session you will be able to feel the difference.  Keep in mind that it is also a good idea to use the foam roller after a workout or sporting event to help prevent the body from forming those knots.

Foam rollers are amazing!! I have been using one ( not the same one (:  ) for about five years, and I cannot tell you enough about how great they are. The main thing that foam rolling will do is work on tissue quality. Now what does that mean? Your muscles are tissues but they are also covers with another form of tissue called fascia. Now both of these tissues can become knotted or build scar tissue. How does that happen, well for most of you on this site, it might have to do with all of you being amazing and starting an exercise program.

Well the way it works is by adding an external force to those tissues, has been shown to reduce the knots that are in and around the tissue. All in all, I suggest that you get one and see how great this little, relatively inexpensive tool can help you feel better.
