There are various types of certifications offered by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, depending on a nurse’s specialty and education. For example, a Critical Care Registered Nurse, CCRN, has met several criteria. This nurse has passed a certification exam, which is taken at a testing center. To be eligible to sit for the exam, the nurse has worked a minimum of 1750 hours in direct care of critically ill patients within the past two years. The CCRN certification is renewed every 3 years by obtaining continuing education units and working a specific number of hours with critically ill patients.
