With most infants I prefer to try rice cereal first because the taste is fairly mild and acceptable to most infants. In addition, it is fortified with iron and nutrients and the chance of an allergy to rice cereal is extremely low. Prepare the cereal using breast milk, formula, or water. Initially make it a soup-like consistency so it runs right off the spoon. If your infant takes it, you can make it slightly thicker over time. At first your infant may only take half of a baby spoonful once or twice a day, but will probably increase quickly to a tablespoon amount (still fed with a tiny baby spoon) twice a day.
