The only way to avoid secondhand smoke is to keep it out of enclosed spaces. That's at home, in the car, or where you work or play. There is no safe level of secondhand smoke. If you have smokers in your household, tell them they can't smoke in the house or car. That goes for visitors and babysitters too. And opening a window or smoking in the door jam is not good enough. Smokers should go outside, close the door behind them, and move away from any open windows.

When you are out and about, don't go into places that still allow smoking. Don't be fooled by designated no-smoking areas indoors. You can still be exposed to secondhand smoke.

And for all you apartment dwellers: If you have a smoker living on your floor, you are out of luck, because smoke can permeate into other apartments through vents and under doors.

Avoid public areas that allow smoking. Discourage smoking around you, and do not hang out with friends while they are smoking. Also avoid work places that will  expose you to smoking.
