Peanut butter should generally be avoided until after age one because it can promote an allergic response in children younger than 12 months. Other foods to be avoided included eggs, cow's milk, honey, nuts, shellfish, wheat, and strawberries.

Most parents can feel free to try peanut butter for their children after the children turn one-year-old. This also hold true for fish, shellfish and egg whites.

The parents who have to be even more careful are those who have a peanut allergy themselves or if the child has a biological sibling with a peanut allergy. In these cases, some doctors suggest waiting until two-years-old.
