Asperger's syndrome is one of the autism spectrum disorders. Asberger's syndrome generally has mild symptoms, and children with this form of ASD can function well in many situations. Symptoms include repetitive behaviors, obsessive interests, overly sensitive to noises and textures, and an extremely literal use of language.

In the current DSM-IV, Asperger’s syndrome is one of the autism spectrum disorders. Currently the diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome is given when children show the social and communication deficits as well as the restricted interests and repetitive behaviors that are characteristic of autism but do not have a language delay (i.e., phrase speech develops by age 3). However, in the new DSM-V that will be out this year there will no longer be the label of Asperger’s syndrome.

William Stillman answered:Yes, as it is presently defined, Asperger's Syndrome is one of five clinically-indicated Pervasive Developmental Disorders (commonly known as the "autism spectrum"). However, the American Psychiatric Association, which revises and publishes each edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, has proposed removing Asperger's from the category of PDDs in the new DSM (scheduled for 2013 publication).
