Although research is not clear at this time, early evidence suggest that some components of foods that may play a role in reducing the risk of cancer, including phytochemicals, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber. Phytochemicals, found in brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as carrots and beets, may act as antioxidants to prevent cancer causing agents from forming. Antioxidants, such as vitamin C and E and beta carotene, may protect the body from the damaging effects of free radicals that can lead to cancer. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oils and flaxseed oil, may delay or reduce the tumor development in breast and prostate cancer.
