If your child recently lost group health coverage because they reached the plan’s maximum age cut off, your child may still be eligible for a continuation of the benefits. Federal law (COBRA) provides an additional three years of eligibility. Maintaining the insurance may be expensive, but it will help your adult child qualify for better coverage on their own later. If your child turned 18 and you’ve received a discontinuation notice from the health plan, make sure you inform the plan administrator that your child is in school, has applied to or is enrolled in college. Once you tell the plan about your child’s status as a student, most plans will continue to cover students until the age of 26, or in some states even 30.
