Treatments that don't involve medication for bruxism, or teeth grinding, are possible. Your dentist can best determine the cause of the problem and what treatment methods may be best for you.

If stress is the cause you need to find a way to relax. Meditation, counseling and exercise can all help reduce stress and anxiety. Your dentist can fit you with a mouth guard to protect your teeth during sleep.

There are alternative treatments for bruxism, as well as treatments that focus on psychological factors that may affect bruxism. For example, biofeedback is a way to learn how to monitor yourself and control grinding motions. People with bruxism who are under a lot of stress may benefit from counseling and stress management. Something as simple as a warm, wet washcloth against your cheek may help your facial and jaw muscles relax.
