Are there alternative treatments for fasciculation?

Because the benign forms of fasciculation can easily be treated, there are a handful of ways to prevent short-term muscle spasms. Sometimes the twitching is caused by a magnesium deficiency, so adding a supplement to your diet can help. Stress can often cause fasciculation, so taking time to relax can alleviate the symptoms. Muscle relaxation can also apply to stress caused by strenuous exercise; gentle physical therapy or immersion in hot water can help ease tense muscles. Finally, it can be helpful to cut back on stimulants like caffeine that may over-stimulate muscles to relieve muscle twitching. Because some forms of fasciculation may be caused by more serious neurological conditions, you should discuss your symptoms with your physician.

Dr. Michael H. Williams of Intermountain Healthcare answered:Fasiculations are a spontaneous, involuntary twitch of a muscle which can be seen and/or felt. Usually fasiculations are a benign condition of the muscle perhaps caused by some muscle membrane instability. Most often they are of little or no medical concern but can be distracting. Sometimes they can reflect some fatigue or overuse. So if they are troublesome, perhaps some rest or increase in sleep may help. Otherwise, medical treatment is probably not indicated.
Infrequently, fasciulations can be a symptom of a more serious disease such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. If there is loss of muscle tissue and signficant weakness associated with the fasiculation, additional medical evaluation may be indicated.
