As a woman you wouldn't think I would have information on this, but my husband just did this 3 months ago. The biggest side effects he dealt with were: very tender where the mesh was placed, minimal swelling of the incision sites, and very sore discolored scrotum (like black and blue).

They do prescribe a painkiller but he was able to get by with ibuprofin and Tylenol. We also went on vacation to the Caribbean 10 days later and he had little to no pain. They typically say you should take it easy for about a week and no lifting more than 20 lbs for a week.

However, it is still major surgery where you are put under. You visit the doctor a week later but you should call them if your incisions get infected or you develop a fever, which is also a sign of infection.
