A good deal of research suggests that probiotic bacteria -- live microorganisms that are the same as or similar to the bacteria that are found naturally in the human body -- offer a number of health benefits, though scientists don't yet have proof. Evidence is particularly strong that probiotics can help treat diarrhea, including diarrhea caused by antibiotics. Studies also suggest that probiotics can help ease some kinds of eczema and respiratory infections in children. Research is continuing into many other possible uses.

Bacteria are bad, right? Well, not always.

Bacteria do have a bad reputation. Many people believe that all they do is cause infections and illness. But some bacteria are actually good for you. These health-enhancing bacteria are called “probiotics” - literally “for life” - in contrast to antibiotics, which kill bacteria.

In short, while harmful bacteria hate your guts, probiotic bacteria love your guts.

There are literally trillions of probiotic bacteria in your body that are good for you, especially in the mouth, gut, and vagina. These are sometimes called your “gut flora.” These live in a complex ecological equilibrium with other bacteria and help keep the harmful ones from growing. Some are known to produce vitamin K and B vitamins. They may also aid your digestion, improve the absorption of nutrients, help reduce the formation of carcinogens, and enhance your immune function.
