  1. If you have developed a mild case of constipation, you probably won't need an enema. However, if you have tried to relieve your constipation with a high-fiber diet, adequate fluids, and regular exercise, and you are still having symptoms, your doctor may recommend an enema. Enemas are prescribed if you are experiencing a complication known as fecal impaction, or tightly packed stools in the colon and rectum. Enemas are available over-the-counter in formulas containing just water or water with mineral oil or salt to help the stools move more easily.
