    NorthShore University HealthSystem answered:

Amnesia is memory loss that involves the inability to recall information, events, or facts. Amnesia is often the result of injury or damage to the parts of the brain that process memories, and it is usually triggered by some immediate injury or event. Dementia is a term that encompasses any condition in which daily activities are impaired. With dementia, memory loss comes on gradually and is accompanied by confusion and having difficulty communicating and making decisions.
