  1. For now, a low-galactose diet seems to be the best option for treating galactosemia. However, research is being conducted to learn more about alternative treatments for some of the effects of galactosemia. In 2005, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine funded a study to look into the effectiveness of polyphenols, plant-based chemical compounds, in treating cataracts, one of the known complications of galactosemia.
