Can an antibiotic be given prophylactically before surgery?

    Yes, an antibiotic can be given prophylactically before surgery and will be more effective when administered within 30-60 minutes prior to making the surgical incision.  This may not be necessary for all procedures and the type of antibiotic will be dependent upon factors such as: where the incisions will be made; how long the surgery is anticipated to last; the presence of a foreign object (such as an implant, hardware, or other prosthetic); existing medical conditions; or previous history of infections.  For long surgeries, the antibiotic might be redosed during the operation.  Along with any allergies or previous antibiotic use, this is a good discussion to have with your surgeon prior to a procedure.
