As you age, the fat deposits in your body tend to move from the areas under the skin (subcutaneous) to the areas around the organs in your abdomen such as your intestines and stomach (visceral fat). Fat can also increase around the heart and muscles. With aging, fat from meals that you eat is more likely to be deposited around your abdominal organs rather than under the skin. Having a large amount of this visceral fat is associated with increased risk for death, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.
